JUAREZ MATTERS

Como muchos saben, Ciudad Juárez vivió años devastadores de violencia y dolor. Estos graves sucesos llevaron a la sociedad juarense a reflexionar sobre las desfavorables condiciones socioeconómicas que lastiman a gran parte de la población y que fueron un factor para que se agudizara el terror.

Actualmente la ciudad está mejor, pero es importante que no olvidemos las causas de este problema para que no vuelva a suceder. Me gustaría dedicar este espacio para reconocer a las muchas organizaciones de la sociedad civil e individuos que están trabajando para que las cosas en Juárez sucedan mejor.

Esta foto que tomé en un camión urbano, mejor conocido en casa como “ruta”, representa para mí el espíritu juarense. Así como este novio toma una ruta sucia y descuidada en la noche para llevar este tierno regalo a su novia, la gente de Juárez es, aun en condiciones azarosas, gente generosa y de buen corazón.

Like many of you know, Ciudad Juarez endured several devastating years of violence and pain. During this time, the people of Juarez reflected upon the poor socioeconomic conditions that compounded the terror and devastation across the city.

Nowadays the city is better, but it’s important that we don’t forget the causes of this problem so that it never happens again. I would like to dedicate this space to recognize the many organizations and individuals who are working to make things better in Juarez.

For me, this photo that I took on a public bus represents the spirit of Juarez. Just as this boyfriend takes a rundown bus at night to take this sweet gift to his girlfriend, the people of Juarez are, despite the haphazard conditions of the city, goodhearted and upright.
