Testigo de uno de los eventos de represión gubernamental más lamentables en la historia de México, Tlatelolco representa para muchos mexicanos un lugar gris y sombrío. Sin embargo, lo que vi y viví contradice esta percepción. Tlatelolco aloja una comunidad vibrante, diversa, e histórica. Este ensayo fotográfico es una mirada al Tlatelolco del día al día, el cual es hogar de adultos mayores, jóvenes parejas, mascotas, pequeños negocios, ruinas arqueologías, memoriales, y un pulmón de árboles y jardines en medio de la Ciudad de México.
Witness of one of the most regrettable events of government repression in the history of Mexico, Tlateloco represents for many Mexicans a dark and grim place. However, what I saw and what I experienced contradicts this perception. Tlatelolco hosts a vibrant, diverse, and historical community. This photo essay aims to provide an everyday look at this neighborhood, which is home to seniors, young couples, pets, small stores, historical ruins, memorials, and groves of trees and gardens amidst chaotic Mexico City.
Tlatelolco destaca por su funcionalidad. Mario Pani, quien también diseño el campus principal de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, planeó a Tlatelolco para ser “una ciudad dentro de una ciudad.” La colonia tiene una población aproximada de 30,000 habitantes y cuenta con tres clínicas de salud, un hospital, tres teatros, una parada de metro, dos paradas de metrobus, un centro cultural, una alberca pública, escuelas, abundantes áreas verdes y canchas deportivas, y diversas tiendas de comercio que abastecen las necesidades diarias de sus habitantes.
Tlatelolco stands out for its functionality. Mario Pani, who also designed the main campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, envisioned Tlatelolco to be a “city inside a city.” This neighborhood has an approximate population of 30,000 people and it houses three health clinics, one hospital, three theaters, a subway station, two rapid transit bus stations, a cultural center, a public pool, schools, abundant green areas and sport courts, and small stores that supply the daily need of its inhabitants.
Gracias al diseño integral de Pani, las extensas áreas verdes ofrecen a los vecinos el lugar ideal para pasear a sus mascotas. Depende de a quien se le pregunte, esto puede ser bendición para unos y maldición para otros…
Thanks to the integral design of Pani, the extensive green areas provide the neighbors the perfect place to walk their pets. Depending on whom you ask, this is a blessing for some and a curse for others….
Tlatelolco resalta además por su historia. En 1536, los Franciscanos establecieron la primera universidad de las Américas, el Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco. El objetivo de este colegio era preparar a la elite indígena para el sacerdocio, cargos políticos y de docencia.
Sin embargo años después la iglesia y el gobierno prohibieron que los indígenas, negros, y mulatos fuesen sacerdotes y maestros, acabando con el objetivo original de la institución, y dejando el monopolio de la evangelización y la docencia a cargo de los europeos y criollos.
Tlatelolco also stands out for its history. In 1536, the Franciscans established the first higher education institution of the Americas, the Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco. The goal of this college was to prepare the indigenous elite for priesthood, political positions, and teaching.
However, years later, the church and the government banned the indigenous, blacks, and mulattos from becoming priests and educators, ending the original goal of the institution, and leaving to the Europeans and criollos the monopoly of evangelization and teaching.

Son muchos. En tiempos recientes, Tlatelolco fue el escenario de unos de los más violentos actos de represión gubernamental. El dos de octubre de 1968, el gobierno federal mandó atacar a los estudiantes que se manifestaban en la plaza de las Tres Culturas.
Como verdaderos héroes, muchos vecinos abrieron sus puertas para brindar refugio a los estudiantes. En palabras de sus habitantes, los eventos trágicos que sucedieron sirven hoy en día para concientizar a la gente sobre los derechos humanos y el abuso y opresión gubernamental.
In recent times, Tlatelolco was the stage of one of the most violent acts of governmental repression. On October 2, 1968, the federal government attacked the students who were demonstrating on the plaza of the Tres Culturas.
Like true heroes, many neighbors opened their doors to provide refuge to the students. In the words of Tlatelolco’s inhabitants, the tragic events that occurred helped to raise awareness about human rights and government abuse and oppression.
Son pocos los lugares que han sido testigo de tantos eventos históricos que han dejado huella en el país. Desde la época prehispánica hasta la moderna, uno puede encontrar en Tlatelolco distintas épocas de México. El proyecto habitacional masivo de Pani, sus habitantes, y los eventos del pasado hacen de Tlatelolco un hogar vibrante y un verdadero museo urbano.

Few are the places that have witnessed such number of historical events which have left a mark on the country. From pre-Columbian to modern times, one can find in Tlatelolco different periods of Mexico. Pani’s massive housing project, its inhabitants, and the events in the past make Tlatelolco a vibrant home and a true urban museum.
